Brief Description:   In order to thank the City’s unpaid EMS volunteers for their service and in gratitude for their dedication and commitment to our community, this Resolution provides retention stipends for unpaid EMS volunteers, who are currently not compensated for their annual volunteer hours.

Purpose & Explanation

The Hudson City Administration and Fire/EMS Department are grateful for the service of our unpaid EMS volunteers. We recognize that their dedication and commitment to our community is essential to our ability to provide high-quality EMS services. Our volunteers give countless hours of their time and energy to help others, and we are truly indebted to them.

We are also committed to creating a culture of safety service volunteerism within our community. We encourage others to join our team and make a difference in the lives of others.

The Hudson City Administration and Fire/EMS Department wish to retain EMS volunteers, that are currently not compensated for their volunteer annual hours.  These EMS volunteers put in over 600 hours per year and perform critical roles on the EMS team alongside the paid paramedics for the City of Hudson.

The City Administration is proposing to provide an annual end of the year retention stipend based on the number of years of service of the unpaid Emergency Medical Service Volunteers as follows:

                     EMS Volunteers with 10+ years of service = $1,500 annual stipend
                     EMS Volunteers with 5+ year & up to 10 years of service = $1,000 annual stipend
                     EMS Volunteers with 1+ year & up to 5 years of service = $500 annual stipend

Each calendar year each EMS volunteer must: work a minimum of 600 hours with Hudson EMS; work the required holidays per the EMS volunteer holiday policy; have 12 hours of State of Ohio approved EMS Documented Continuing Education hours; have 8 hours of special event attendance for EMS; and be in good standing with Hudson EMS.

This policy will be an annual stipend as approved by the City Manager.

Timing Considerations

Following the review and approval by City Council, the annual policy for the retention stipend for the Volunteer EMS personnel will go into effect.
