Purpose & Explanation
In 2019 staff had a Master Plan created that addresses all the specific needs for repairs and restorations to historic headstones at the Old Hudson Township Burying Grounds, located on Chapel Street. In September 2020, the City and Western Reserve Academy initiated a partnership to restore, preserve and use the Old Hudson Township Burying Ground as a cross-curricular classroom.
In October 2020, The David Hudson Questers donated $3,000 to repair 11 items from the Master Plan list, which was completed in the fall of 2020. At this time, Western Reserve Academy has donated $3,000, Marci Matthews has donated $10,000 and the City was awarded a $17,000 grant from the Ohio History Fund. The total for required repairs and restorations was budgeted at $50,000. $20,000 has been included in the 2021 Cemetery Budget with the remaining $30,000 being funded with donations as described above.
Following the approval of this resolution by the City Council, the Public Works Department will advertise, receive bids, and award the contract for the historic preservation work to be performed as soon as possible.
