Executive Summary: The Public Works Department budgets annually for the purchase of road salt for de-icing city streets for winter traffic safety. The Public Works Department seeks City Council approval to purchase road salt from the vendor Cargill Incorporated participating in the CUE (Community, University and Education Purchasing Association).

Purpose & Explanation
Rather than bid on an annual basis for road salt, the City of Hudson has historically taken advantage of the Community, University and Education (C.U.E.) cooperative purchase program for the procurement of road salt. By participating in the CUE purchasing program the City has the potential to realize a cost savings for the purchase of bulk road salt.
The attached bid tabulation shows the low bid CUE bulk road salt pricing for the 2013-2014 winter season. The low bid is $39.84 per ton for delivered bulk road salt with Cargill Incorporated. The 2013-14 price is $4.97 less than last year's price of $44.81 per ton. Our average winter season road salt use is 10,000 tons. This year's pricing equates to an estimated savings of $49,700. The finance department budgets $380,000 annually for road salt purchases.
