Brief Description: Each year the Public Works Department solicits prices for the conveying of delivered road salt into the City salt storage facilities. Staff wishes to award the salt conveying contract for the 2020-2021 winter season.

Purpose & Explanation
The Public Works Department will use an estimated 9,000 tons of road salt during the winter season in carrying out the snow and ice control program. The Public Works Department has received road salt conveyance quotes from both Community, University and Education (CUE) Public Purchasing Program vendor Cargill Incorporated, and Kolenz Transport, Inc. to convey bulk road salt into the salt storage facilities. Below is a price breakdown comparison. The annual budget for road salt conveyance services is $35,000.
Vendor 1: Conveyed by CUE vendor, Cargill Incorporated: $5.00/ton
Vendor 2: Conveyed by Kolenz: $3.80/ton (net savings over Vendor 1 = $1.20/ton x 9,000 tons = $10,800)
Timing Considerations
Upon City Council approval, the Public Works Staff will execute the purchase agreement for contract road salt conveying services for the 2020-2021 winter season. Services will likely not occur until after 1/1/21

Suggested Action
Based on submitted unit pricing for the 2020 - 2021 snow season, staff recommends that City Council authorize the City Manager to enter into a contract for bulk road salt conveying services with Kolenz Transport, Inc., 3566 State Road-Suite 3, Cuyahoga Falls, OH 44223, at the unit price of $3.80 per ton.
