Purpose & Explanation

The Veteran’s Trail, all-purpose pathway system was originally conceived in the 2000 Hudson Parks Master Plan.  The project was dived into five phases with the goal to expand the City’s bicycle and pedestrian access to other local trails and downtown.   The original alignment of the Veterans Trail Phase 2 segment was from Hines Hill Road, along Prospect Street over the Ohio Turnpike to Morse Road and then into downtown (see exhibit attached).

As part of the original Veterans Trail Phase 2 project, the Prospect Street bridge over I-80 would need modified to accept the width of the new trail.    The design and construction of this bridge work was originally planned as a stand-alone project, scheduled for design and construction in 2018-2019 by the Ohio Turnpike & Infrastructure Commission’s (OTIC’s) as part of a bridge rehabilitation project.    Due to OTIC delaying the rehabilitation of their bridge, the City identified the alternate alignment of the Phase 2 trail section from Prospect Street, then along Hunting Hollow Drive and Valley View Road where it would to then connect to the 8’ multi-purpose path on SR 91 (see exhibit attached).

The current, updated project would construct a 10’ wide, off-road pathway along Valley View Road between Hunting Hollow Drive and SR 91.  The project also includes an on-road section, via pavement markings and signage, along Hunting Hollow Drive between Valley View Road and W. Prospect Street.

The current estimated cost of construction of the Valley View Trail Project is $1,000,000 which includes a 10% contingency amount.  The entire project will be funded with 100% City funding and is planned for construction in the summer, 2023.

The Ohio Turnpike Commission has identified that the Prospect Street pedestrian bridge design is anticipated in 2023 and construction in 2025.  Future trail sections along Hines Hill Road and Prospect Street are currently scheduled for design and construction in 2025-2027.
