Body
Legislative History
Res. 25-182 - Approval to advertise, bid and award contract and make purchases for the 2026 Public Works purchasing Program.
Purpose & Explanation
The purpose of this resolution is to authorize the purchase of additional road salt and associated conveying costs under the City's current 2025/2026 road salt contract. Taking advantage of the remaining purchasing capacity under the current contract will allow the City to secure additional salt at a lower price before the contract expires on August 31, 2026.
The City currently has the ability under its existing road salt contract to exceed its original salt allocation by up to 20%. With the City's current salt storage facilities operating at approximately one-quarter to one-third capacity, there is sufficient available storage to accommodate an additional purchase.
Recently released pricing for the upcoming 2026/2027 road salt contract reflects an increase of $9.31 per ton compared to the current 2025/2026 contract pricing. By utilizing the City's existing contract and maximizing the allowable 20% increase in our current allocation, the City can secure additional road salt at the lower 2025/2026 contract rate.
This purchase would result in an estimated $18,182.42 savings compared with purchasing the same quantity under the newly established 2026/2027 pricing. In addition to the direct cost savings, securing additional salt now will provide the City with increased inventory heading into the upcoming winter season and reduce exposure to the higher contract price.
This is a time-sensitive matter. The additional salt must be ordered prior to the expiration of the current contract on August...
