Executive Summary: The Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program provides funding to meet the firefighting and emergency response needs of fire departments. It is intended to help fire departments obtain needed equipment, protective gear, training and resources needed to protect the public and emergency personnel from fire and related hazards.

Purpose & Explanation
The Hudson Fire Department is interested in applying for a regional grant to fund the replacement of self-contained breathing apparatuses (SCBA’s) for the Hudson Fire Department and the Valley Fire District. The Valley Fire District jurisdiction covers the Village of Peninsula, Boston Township, and Village of Boston Heights. The cost of the SCBA’s for both departments is approximately $310,000.00. There is a 10% match required. Hudson’s portion of the match is approximately $20,000. The Valley Fire District’s match is approximately $11,000. If awarded, a Memorandum of Understanding will be executed between the City of Hudson and the Valley Fire District specifying the distribution of grant funds and mutual responsibilities.

Staff recommends that City Council authorize the City Manager, or her designee, to apply to the Federal Emergency Management Agency for an Assistance to Firefighters Grant and to declare an emergency.
