Purpose & Explanation
Per a resident concern, City Council had requested a discussion concerning the management of tree wood debris in forested and woodland areas of the City’s park land. As such, Public Works Department and parks staff evaluated current management practices and contrasted them with industry standards as related to other park systems. Staff also discussed opportunities to modify the current approach, taking into consideration best practices, commitment to conservation and maintaining a well-balanced eco-system, and concerns of aesthetics. Both Park Board and Tree Commission members were provided information regarding this concern. The Parks staff’s recommendations moving forward were fully supported by both Boards.
Attached is a memorandum to City Manager, Jane Howington outlining the existing Parks Division practices, tree and wood debris industry standards and best practices, and suggested program modifications moving forward.
