11/27/12 Council Workshop (TMP-0242) Bow Hunting on Former Youth Development Center (YDC) Property.
Purpose & Explanation
Earlier this year staff met to discuss and explore the challenges of providing a security plan to permit bow hunting of deer at the former YDC property on Hines Hill Road. Mr. Comeriato, Public Works Director, Mr. Thomas Munn, PW Supt. of Services, and Mr. Eric Hutchinson, Parks Superintendent have prepared a security plan recommendation (see attachments).
In summary, the plan looked at the feasibility and costs associated with installing fencing & signage throughout the restricted hunting areas. The estimated cost to perform the security fencing is $528,100. The estimated cost to purchase and install the signs is $34,850.
Timing Considerations
Staff would like Council's decision/direction on the topic prior to the September 2013 deer (bow hunting) season.

Recommendation
Suggested Action
Due to concerns previously voiced by staff, in addition to the costs associated with securing the restricted hunting areas for bow hunting of deer at the former YDC property on Hines Hill Road, staff continues to recommend that hunting not be permitted on this parcel.
