Purpose & Explanation
Both the Clocktower and the Gazebo Greens currently have the City's standard light posts installed in various locations to light specific areas. Although there is sufficient lighting that illuminates portions of the existing sidewalks, there are some dark areas that have been identified. There is also the impact of tree leaves and canopy during the summer and fall that increase the dark spots along some portions of the sidewalks.
Staff has evaluated these low light areas and has mapped out the locations of additional light posts and fixtures to better illuminate all the sidewalks on both greens. We have also experimented with the intensity of existing lighting in an attempt to perhaps reach a level of acceptable lighting on the sidewalks and were not able to reach what we felt was adequate illumination of affected areas of sidewalk. Attached are two maps indicating the proposed locations for the additional light posts to be installed. Staff believes that additional lighting would improve the lighting from a safety perspective for pedestrians using the walks at night.
Staff have also received requests for both architectural features and specific tree lighting on these greens, as well as new landscaping options in certain areas. We have not included those items at this time in this recommendation. Staff feel those areas of interest should be looked at as part of an overall evaluation of downtown improvements and amenities in future budget years. The topic will be discussed in Council at future workshops.
