Purpose & Explanation
This project will install 14 fire hydrants on the City of Akron water main along Middleton and Stow Roads to improve fire protection for nearby properties. While the original plan included hydrants along Ravenna Street, staff no longer recommends work on that section after consulting with Akron Water. The existing 20-inch transmission main on Ravenna Street is aging, specialized pressure pipe, that would require a complex tapping process and carries a high risk of failure. Consequently, Akron has prohibited new taps due to the material's fragility along this watermain.
The estimated construction cost is $245,000, which includes a contingency fund, and we expect to complete the work during the spring or summer of 2026. Once City Council approves this resolution, the Engineering Department will advertise for bids in the local newspaper. Staff will only return to Council if the resulting bids exceed the engineer's estimate by more than 10%. Otherwise, the City Manager will be authorized to enter into a contract with the lowest and best bidder.
