A RESOLUTION AFFIRMING THE SUBMISSION OF AN APPLICATION BY THE CITY MANAGER’S DESIGNEE TO THE DEPARTMENT OF HOMELAND SECURITY FOR A FEMA FIRE PREVENTION & SAFETY GRANT FOR THE HUDSON FIRE DEPARTMENT.

Executive Summary:  The purpose of the Fire Prevention & Safety Grant Program is to enhance the safety of the public and firefighters with respect to fire and fire-related hazards by assisting fire prevention programs and supporting firefighter health and safety research and development.

Purpose & Explanation

Staff seeks authorization to apply for a Fire Prevention & Safety Grant to implement a fire prevention program aimed at the at-risk senior citizen population.  The program would include installation of residential Knox boxes and hearing impaired smoke detectors in 100 homes.  The grant could fund up to approximately $51,000 requiring a 5% match (approximately $2,550).

Timing Considerations

The Hudson Fire Department determined a need for the grant funds on May 10, 2017, and a grant application was submitted by the May 19, 2017, deadline.

Suggested Action

Staff recommends that Council affirm the City Manager’s Designee’s application for grant funding through the Department of Homeland Security’s FEMA Fire Prevention & Safety Grant program on behalf of the Hudson Fire Department.
