Executive Summary: Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) NatureWorks is a state funded grant program that provides up to 75% of project cost assistance to Ohio municipalities, counties, townships, joint recreation districts, park districts and conservancy districts for acquisition or development of public outdoor recreation areas. Funding of $141,697 will be provided throughout Summit County in 2015.

The Hudson Park Board recommended that City Council authorize the application for the NatureWorks grant on March 16, 2015.
Purpose & Explanation
The Parks Department has $37,000 budgeted for shade structures at Veterans Way Park. The Park Board toured Veterans Way Park on August 10, 2014 and talked to park users. Parents of preschoolers expressed the need for a shade structure over the playground area. Users of the skatepark also expressed the need for a shaded area where they could relax out of the sun.
The Parks Department will request $40,000 towards the purchase of shade structures for the playground area, two shade structure/picnic table combinations for use near the skatepark and the basketball court and three picnic tables for use in the playground area. The estimated cost of this project is $60,000.
The Ohio Department of Natural Resources requires a City Council Resolution authorizing and permitting the submission of the grant application.
Timing Considerations
The grant application is due May 1, 2015.
