Purpose & Explanation
Public Works staff has met with Hudson resident Chris Bach, who is working with a group of residents who wish to restore the WWI Memorial on the Boy Scout Green. He believes that the Boy Scouts and the American Legion initially raised the funds to purchase the plaque honoring 81 Hudson residents who lost their lives in WWI. The plaque was initially hung on the Clocktower in the 1920s. In the early 1930s, the plaque was removed from the Clocktower and moved to its current location and incorporated into a monument which had a large bronze cannon on top of it. During the 1940s, the cannon was removed from the monument. The monument has remained mostly unchanged since that time.

The group of Hudson residents hopes to raise funds in order to make improvements to the memorial. They hope to announce on April 7th that they will be applying for a grant. The grant program, titled 100 Cities/100 Memorials, can provide funding up to $2,000 for improvements. They will also seek private donations from other interested residents, businesses and organizations. The end result will be an improved memorial, which is also a nationally registered WWI Memorial. The amount of funds raised would determine the level of restoration of the monument.

Mr. Bach's presentation is attached to this file.
Timing Considerations
Mr. Bach expects the process to begin with the raising of funds this spring and summer. Possible restoration of the WWI Memorial would not occur until summer and fall of 2018.
