Purpose & Explanation

Staff is seeking funding to hire two entry-level sworn officers.  The COPS Officer Hiring Program provides 75 percent funding for the approved entry-level salaries and fringe benefits of newly hired full-time sworn career law enforcement officers over three years (36 months) up to a maximum of $125,000 per officer position.  The City of Hudson would be required to retain the COPS funded positions, in addition to the officers funded in the current budget, for the required retention period of at least twelve months following the conclusion of the three-year award period.

Staff recommends City Council authorize the City Manager, or her designee, to apply for 2017 COPS Officer Hiring Program funding from the U.S. Department of Justice on behalf of the Hudson Police Department for the hiring of two full-time sworn officers.
