Purpose & Explanation
In 2007, the City of Hudson purchased nine leaf vacuum units to begin a citywide leaf removal program. The units have performed well and were originally planned to last nine years. The last several years as the equipment has aged, repairs have become more complex and costly. Staff wishes to continue replacing the units to ensure the continuation of a successful program.
All of the leaf vacuum trailers purchased to date have come equipped with a manually operated suction hose. As participation in the program continues to climb and volumes continue to rise, we wish to purchase a leaf vacuum trailer with a hydraulically controlled suction hose. Staff believes that this option will allow the trailers to continue moving quickly throughout our neighborhoods, while reducing the number of staff shoulder injuries. While the cost of this unit is slightly higher than a traditional unit, staff wishes to purchase a second smaller unit later this year that can be more easily operated within cul-de-sacs. Staff fully expects to stay within the $110,000 amount allocated in the 2017 Budget for the purchase of both units. We have not finalized the pricing of a smaller unit at this time.
