Purpose & Explanation
The City of Hudson Engineering and Public Works Departments investigated a failing storm culvert crossing located under Valley View Road, north of Middleton Road near house #7873 Valley View Road. The existing 3'x5' stone/concrete box culvert has begun to fail due to its age (over 50 years old). The investigation has established that due to the joints of the culvert deteriorating, allowing for erosion and causing small voids under the roadway, settling in the roadway has occurred. It has been determined that the best, long term repair solution to remedy this issue includes the removal of the box culvert and installation of new precast concrete culvert which will provide a long service life (over 50 years).
The City Engineering Department is currently working on finalizing the plans and specifications for the improvements. The work is scheduled to be completed by the Spring of 2018.
The estimated project cost of construction plus 10% contingency is approximately $90,000.
Timing Considerations
Following the approval of this Resolution by City Council, the Engineering Department will advertise in the local newspaper and receive bids for this project. Staff will only return to Council if the bids received are in excess of 10% of the Engineer's Estimate; otherwise the City Manager is authorized to enter into a contract with the lowest and best bidder.
