Purpose & Explanation
In accordance with the Ohio Public Records Law, Ohio Revised Code Sections 109.43 and 149.43(E)(1), elected government officials or their designees must attend, in-person or online, a three-hour public records training program during each term of elective office. The training must be developed and certified by the Ohio Attorney General’s Office, and presented either by the Ohio Attorney General’s Office or an approved entity with which the Attorney General’s Office contracts. Compliance with this training provision is routinely reviewed as part of the City’s annual financial audit.
Council members DeSaussure, Hanink, Kelemen, and Smith have personally attended Sunshine Laws Training in previous terms and have requested that a designee be appointed to fulfill this requirement for their current terms in office. A designee may represent more than one elected official for such training. Mayor Basil and Mr. Weinstein plan to personally complete a training session.
Timing Considerations
A list of upcoming certified training sessions is available on the Ohio Attorney General’s website: <http://www.ohioattorneygeneral.gov/Legal/Sunshine-Laws/Sunshine-Law-Training>
Fiscal Impact:
There is no charge for training offered by the Ohio Attorney General’s Office.
